Composition as Key to Abstract Realism in Contemporary Landscape | Colette Odya Smith | Tue-Fri, Sept 9-12 | 9:00 AM-4:00 PM
Adult | Pastel | Levels 3-4
Members: $560 | Non-Members: $600
Course ID: 2D2530
*This workshop must meet a minimum number of students by August 5, 2025.
Concept
Join Colette as she explores how intentional control of a painting's composition sets the stage for the effectiveness of what you want your landscape to say and how you want it to feel. Examine the historical and cultural power of compositional conventions and learn Colette's best practices for moving her treatment of the landscape beyond mere representationalism. Gather ideas of how to work from your personal photographs - even poor ones - to emphasize the abstract and emotional qualities inherent within realistic images. Emphasis is placed on working in a supportive environment to develop skills, practice techniques, and attend to your personal artistic development.
Experience
Each day includes direct instruction and examples with time for individual work and feedback. Throughout the week Colette demonstrates her process; offering insights into her decision-making and responses to the work in progress. One-on-one guidance and encouragement are provided during generous working time. A collaborative atmosphere provides plenty of opportunities for growth.
Skill Level
Previous pastel experience is required.

INSTRUCTOR
After leaving her position as an art teacher in the public school district and on the flipside of a serious illness, Colette Odya Smith came to her art career midlife. Since then, she has built an award-winning practice, complete with Master Pastellist recognitions from multiple societies. In the classroom, she creates an atmosphere of trust where everyone learns together through listening, looking, sharing, laughing, and eating chocolate. When not making work, Colette loves to travel, garden, connect with her grandchildren, and watch black and white movies.
