*This workshop must meet a minimum number of students by June 10, 2025.

Concept

The chameleon like material of paint can be used in a dizzying array of ways to achieve unique effects and experiences. This workshop introduces you to the various viscosities of acrylic paint as a raw material. Whether you are interested in making representational or abstract paintings, or some combination of both, this workshop can expand the material processes you bring into your studio.

Experience

Each day engage in interactive demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and independent discovery. With Melissa as your guide, explore liquid paint through staining and pouring, use alternative tools such as rollers, paint knives, and squeegees to apply thicker paint, and cast paint and make paint skins that can be applied to surfaces in the manner of mosaic or collage. Learn about basic paint properties and behaviors, such as drying, curing, and adhesion. Work through these techniques and processes with intentionality and control, but also playfulness and experimentation. Melissa provides individualized feedback and recommendations for further explorations throughout the three days.

Skill Level

Some prior painting experience is required.

INSTRUCTOR

Melissa Oresky's practice is rooted in painting and collage; primarily creating mixed media works on canvas and paper. She is interested in the landscape and considers it a bridge between painting, lived experience, environmental consciousness, and imagination. Melissa's goal in the classroom is to offer students practical knowledge paired with critical concepts and strategies to help them innovate and expand. When not making work, she is reading sci-fi novels, knitting, and spending time outdoors with her family. Melissa earned her MFA from UI-Chicago and is a Professor at Illinois State University.
