Time and Space Residency Program

Program Overview

PenArt has long placed a value on taking risks and pursuing new directions throughout our 60-year history — and it’s with that spirit that we’re thrilled to support today’s artists through our Time and Space Residency Program.

Designed for artists of all career stages, this residency program is an immersive studio experience awarded to six individuals per year. The program prioritizes time and space for its residents to engage fully in their creative practice—creating uninterrupted opportunities to experiment and pursue new projects and ideas.

For six weeks, residents receive:

  • A semi-private workspace in our new Madeline Tourtelot Studio Building,

  • Access to our printmaking, digital, metals, and ceramics studios, and equipment,

  • A studio visit with the session’s visiting critic,

  • Housing for the six-week session, and

  • Opportunities to engage with the public about their work and process

In an environment that encourages contemplation, experimentation, and exchange of ideas, this program is invested in new modes of thinking and working in visual art.

From Our Alumni Artists-in-Residence

“The PenArt Residency Program has so much to offer. While (there), I was able to create with few limitations; the open-ended nature of the residency allowed me to experiment without expectation of a finished product and the abundance of space promoted exploration of various media.”

— Spring 2024 Resident

“The staff was very welcoming and helpful with every aspect of this residency. They were quick to answer any questions I had and were willing to go out of their way to make sure the other resident and I were able to live and work comfortably and safely. I really appreciate the thoughtfulness that was put into this experience.

— Winter 2022 Resident

“The studio space is incredible. It’s spacious and filled with beautiful natural light. The perfect blank slate to work in. I’ve never had so much space to work in. It felt overwhelming at first, then it was just amazing. I was grateful every day to be there and I walked away knowing it changed my studio practice for the better.”
