Concept
Discover a new method to add to your mark-making toolkit in this workshop focused on a basic printmaking process that doesn't require a press. Trace monotype was the first printmaking process Carolyn learned over 30 years ago, and it remains her favorite to this day. Known for its gorgeous hazy lines and rich textures, this method strikes the perfect balance between control and unpredictability. Bring this technique back to your painting studio and breathe new life into your work and practice.
Experience
The workshop begins with a complete demonstration, followed by open studio time. While simple to learn, incorporating base layers of paint and registration techniques create stunning, multi-layered results. This versatile process works beautifully on paper, canvas, or wood panel; making it an excellent choice for starting fresh pieces or reinvigorating existing works. Carolyn is on hand throughout the day as a guide and enthusiastic cheerleader.
Skill Level
All levels welcome. No prior printmaking experience required.

INSTRUCTOR
Born and raised in New Bedford, MA, Carolyn Swiszcz followed an older brother to the midwest after high school. She earned a BFA in printmaking at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1994. In the late 90's she spent three winters in Miami Beach on a fellowship from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. Inspired by Miami’s rapidly changing cityscape she began rendering buildings using acrylic paint and various printmaking techniques, stencils, and collage. This thread continues through to her recent work. Carolyn’s proclivity for experimentation and bliss-following has also led her to create songs, music videos, and animations. She currently publishes a mail-order zine, Zebra Cat Zebra. Carolyn’s work has been exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Miyako Yoshinaga Gallery in New York, Highpoint Center for Printmaking in Minneapolis, and Steven Zevitas Gallery in Boston. Her prints have been published by Highpoint Editions in Minneapolis. She is a recipient of the Jerome, McKnight, Bush, and Minnesota State Arts Board artist fellowships. She lives in West Saint Paul, MN with her husband (photographer Wilson Webb) and their daughter.
