Concept
This four-day workshop focuses on drawing on and treating the surface of greenware and bisque-fired clay. Developing your own imagery, learn how to use transfers, templates, water etching, and sgraffito carving, as well as underglaze decoration, decals, and glaze pencils. Create a series of cups and small plates on which to experiment with a spectrum of surface techniques.
Experience
Demonstrations and class resources assist in developing pattern ideas from natural forms, texts, and images; using drawings as templates for applying deliberate surface; decal assemblage; sizing and scaling decoration for your forms; and more. Hands-on working time is emphasized and one-on-one feedback is provided throughout the week. Students are encouraged to bring a few bisque pieces for experimentation, or one will be provided.

INSTRUCTOR
Debbie Kupinsky works primarily in porcelain with an emphasis on the natural world and every day objects. She has been a resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts (MT) twice, The Appalachian Center for Craft (TN), and the Arts/Industry Program at Kohler (WI). Debbie earned her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA from Louisiana State University. She is an Associate Professor in sculpture and ceramics at St Norbert College. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes experimentation, play, and working in series. When not in the studio, Debbie enjoys gardening, running, and kayaking on the Fox River in Appleton.
