Incorporating Watercolors with Oil Painting Techniques | Trina Smith | Fri-Sat, July 11-12 | 9:00 AM-4:00 PM
Adult | Oil | Watercolor | All Levels
Members: $300 | Non-Members: $325
Course ID: 2D2513
*This workshop must meet a minimum number of students by June 5, 2025.
Concept
In this workshop, learn how to make a painting that incorporates both watercolor and oil painting mediums. By preparing the painting surface with an absorbent watercolor ground, you can start with expressive watercolor effects and then use oil paint for finishing effects in the same composition. As every medium has their distinct strengths, this way of working allows you to combine the best of both worlds. Material handling and paint application with watercolor and oil are explored, as well as how those techniques in combination with your unique visual approach relate to the content of your work.
Experience
With Trina as your guide explore the potential of each medium through preliminary studies in the mornings, and engage in more finished paintings in the afternoons. Individualized instruction and feedback is provided throughout each day. It is recommended that you work from either observation or images of nature for this workshop.
Skill Level
All are welcome with any range of experience with acrylic and/or oil.

INSTRUCTOR
In Trina Smith’s classroom, everyone has vast artistic potential. She sees it as her role to create a space in which students feel comfortable enough to take risks and engage fully in the creative process. In her own work, Trina explores how visual imagery acts as a metaphor for the complexity of social structure. When not in the studio, she takes trips to Montana and spends time outdoors kayaking, camping, and cross-country skiing. Trina earned her MFA from UW-Madison and is an Assistant Professor of Drawing and Painting at UW-Oshkosh.
